WAB/WAI AWARDS

The Worked All Britain and Worked All Ireland award schemes were initially devised to stimulate and promote an interest in amateur radio in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In the case of WAB the scheme was based on the geography of Great Britain and Northern Ireland whilst in the case of WAI, the scheme covered the entire island of Ireland. Both schemes, although similar in nature, are not identical but they share a common aim ie to promote friendship through amateur radio and to increase activity from both mobile and fixed  stations.

Putting it simply,  the two schemes divide their respective countries into a series of squares, each square being 10km in size. The more squares a station works the more points they gain. When the requisite number of squares have been worked and points earned, an award may be claimed. Many  different awards are available in both schemes so it is essential that you refer to the two websites ( links below) for detailed information as to when and how you may claim an award.

The Worked All Britain scheme was devised by the late John Morris G3ABG in 1969 and since its inception, W.A.B. has grown through the voluntary efforts of many individuals. W.A.B. has many aims and has the motto “To assist others” and so aims to help less fortunate amateurs and provides, when funds allow, donations to organisations like the Radio Amateur Invalid & Blind Club, QTI etc.

The WAB preferred frequencies are as follows:

Worked All Ireland Awards are available to Amateur Radio Operators and SWL's throughout the world. Sponsored by the Galway VHF radio group on behalf of the IRTS, awards are granted for working EI/GI grid squares, counties and islands. It is worth noting that the WAB and WAI squares in Northern Ireland are identical and if worked for one award also qualify for the other.

The preferred frquencies for WAI are 3.680, 7.068 and 145.350 (MHz).
