| The Radio Shack
The Radio Shack is where the ham radio enthusiast keeps and operates his or her radio station. It may be in a room, part of a room, the roof space, garage, shed or even a car. Part of the shack may also be used as the amateurs radio workshop. Shacks will contain a variety of equipment including rigs, power supplies, ATU's, microphones, computers and printers. Some will contain lots of gear, others will be modest but, irrespecive of size or location, they must be well laid out and safe. Electrical shock, RF burns, trailing cables are major hazards which must be avoided since the wellbeing of the radio operator (and guests) is of paramount importance. Many articles have been written and webpages produced on how to design and lay out a shack takng into account health and safety issues. Perhaps the most important point to bear in mind is that all equipment should be controlled by one master switch, the position of which is known to others in the house or club. Secondly, ensure all equipment (including antennas) is properly grounded by connecting to a good and permanent earth. Finally, ensure all wiring is adequately insulated and concealed. As already stated above much has been written on this topic in the past and lots more will come in the future but for now it is recommended that you visit the Electronics and Radio site where you will find a succinct and useful summary of how to design a safe and tidy shack.
