Out and About
Whilst most ham radio operation tends to take place within the confines of the operators shack, there are many occasions when the licenced amateur has the oportunity to get "out and about". Lots of amateurs jump at the chance of operating when on holiday whether that be from a caravan, hotel room, seaside resort or wherever, be it at home or abroad. Others will go on DXpeditions, operate from hill and mountan tops, set up mobile or maritime mobile stations or operate using hand held radios whilst out for a walk or rambling in the countryside.
Special event stations are frequently established either by individiuals or local clubs to commemorate specific events. These stations are normally open to the public and present an opportunity for the ham radio enthusiast to demonstrate what the hobby is about and how friendships at both local and international level may be formed through radio communication. Examples of special event stations include those set up world-wide for the Scouts "Jamboree On The Air" and the Guides "Thinking Day".
In this section of the website we take a look at some of the activities which take place away from the shack including going mobile, IOTA, SOTA, and some lighthouse operations. Click the links on the left to find out more.
