| Operators
Who are these amateur radio operators? They are men and women like you and me, can be any age, come from any income bracket or any nationality. There is nothing special about them other than their interest in radio communication. Some will prefer to use morse code, others voice communication. Then there are those who utilise all forms of computerised messages (i.e. the digi modes) or transmit their signals around the world via the amateur satellite service. What is common to all is an interest in what happens in the world and they use radio to reach out.
But what attracts people to this unique hobby? Well some are drawn by the ability to communicate across the country, around the world, or even with astronauts on space missions. Others like to build and experiment with electronics. Some enjoy using amateur radio's digital communication facilities. Those with a competitive streak enjoy "DX contests," where the object is to see how many hams in distant locations they can contact. Some like the convenience of a technology that gives them portable communication . All, without exception, enjoy a unique and challenging hobby which generates lifelong international friendships through out the world.
Hams are always willing to help others who are excited about becoming ham radio operators and many give willingly of their time to pass on their knowledge and skills to the next generation of operators.
Hams are also to the forefront of technology. FM radio, television and cellular phones were being used by hams long before they became available to the general public . Updated 13 June, 2010 21:31:01 GMT | |
